In the anime, the Talismans were weapons that the Death Busters were searching for, as well as Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus. They were said to be sealed inside the Pure Heart Crystals of three individuals. Eudial eventually discovers that two of the Talisman are sealed inside the hearts of Uranus and Neptune. Uranus and Neptune remove their Pure Hearts themselves, which causes them to die and the two talisman appear from their hearts. Sailor Pluto reveals herself and reveals that she possess the last talisman. Uranus and Neptune are revived, and the three used the talismans to summon the Holy Grail, causing Sailor Moon to transform into Super Sailor Moon for the first time.
Manga and Crystal
Unlike the anime, the three Senshi were already in possession of the Talismans. Sailor Neptune's talisman was the first shown, as she carried it around with her while in civilian form. Sailor Uranus did not carry around her talisman, but instead summoned it when needed in battle. Sailor Pluto kept her talisman, the Garnet Orb atop the Garnet Rod, and she was able to use it in both civilian and Senshi form. When the three talismans came together, they would awaken Sailor Saturn, who would bring destruction in her awakening. When the 3 Outer Senshi combine their powers using the talisman they form a barrier.
These three items are based on the Japanese myth of the legendary three treasures which the sun goddess Amaterasu brought to Japan (the sword, the jewel, and the mirror). This legend has manifested itself in different forms in several other anime, including Yuu Yuu Hakusho, GS Mikami, and Samurai Troopers (Ronin Warriors).
