Jadeite is the first of the four Shitennou to be introduced.

Appearance[]

Jadeite had the same appearance that he had in the manga. In the anime, his hair is blonde and his eyes are blue. He wears the standard grey Shitennou uniform, which has red accents and is coupled with a pair of knee-high maroon boots.

Information[]

Sailor Moon[]

In the anime, Jadeite was primarily focused on gathering human energy to awaken the ruler of the Dark Kingdom, Queen Metalia. When plotting for a method to steal human energy, Jadeite would observe the behavior of humans and then report back to the Dark Kingdom, appearing in front of Queen Beryl to explain his plans. Once approval was sought from Queen Beryl, he would dispatch his vassal (i.e., a youma) to take on a human disguise, and with the aid of the Youma, he started gathering energy from humans. His method for gathering human energy would be to draw large crowds using his Youma and trick them into buying goods charged with dark energy (e.g. jewelry, Chanelas, clocks, good luck charms) or use services that stole human energy (e.g. “relaxation pods”, tarot cards and computer applications).

From the beginning, Jadeite was fairly confident of himself, often taking a hands-on approach by physically being present in his plots. As a master of disguise, Jadeite would assume numerous human alter-egos and personae; masquerading as a radio host (J Dite), a gym instructor, an MC for a talent contest, a caretaker for the Hikawa Shrine, as well as a security guard at an amusement park. However, his pride got to him, as he underestimated the strength of Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, and Sailor Mars, who always foiled his plans and killed his Youma.

Eventually, Thetis, one of Queen Beryl’s personal youma who had affection for Jadeite, offered to help him with a scheme. Initially reluctant, Jadeite accepts her “romantic cruise strategy”, after realizing he had no other options. Thetis, under the supervision of Jadeite, implemented the scheme, hoping to drain the love energy from couples onboard the cruise ship. This plan is foiled by Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, and Sailor Mars, who were also on board the ship and killed Thetis.

Upon reporting to Queen Beryl, Jadeite was castigated for the use of her personal Youma without her permission and punished him with an ultimatum: kill the Sailor Guardians or be condemned to Eternal Sleep. Desperate, Jadeite challenged Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, and Sailor Mars to a duel at the main runway of Haneda Airport at one o’clock in the morning; otherwise he would burn Tokyo to the ground. Luna consults with Rei, Ami, and Usagi over the perceived threat.

Deciding what to do, Rei wanted to accept Jadeite's duel while Ami refused, believing that it may be a trap, while a reluctant Usagi decides that they should not fight . Assuming it to be a hoax, the police play down the threat. Usagi later changes her mind and accepts the duel, citing concerns over her classmates as they voice their interest in watching the upcoming fight. The threat to burn the city to the ground did not go ignored, and teams of officers arrived at the airport (although Jadeite latter rendered them unconscious, replacing them with imitations made of mud). Upon arriving at the airport in a specially chartered monorail carriage, Rei, Ami, and Usagi are chased by the fake police assault teams to the main runway where they transform. Sailor Mars burns the fake police with Fire Soul, destroying them. After witnessing the Sailor Senshi transform, Jadeite learned of their true identities and began his battle by using telekinesis to control nearby airplanes to chase after them.

Sailor Mars attempted to use Fire Soul once again, but is prevented by Luna, given that the amount of money for the damage done to the planes would be too expensive for the Sailor Senshi to pay off. The planes continued to chase after the trio until Tuxedo Mask arrived and fought with Jadeite, who appeared to kill Tuxedo Mask. Although the girls initially became afraid of Jadeite, he began arrogantly taunting them, prompting the Senshi to work together to defeat him. Jadeite caused the planes to chase after the girls again, unaware they had devised a plan. Sailor Moon was used as a decoy while Sailor Mercury used Shabon Spray to obscure Jadeite’s vision; While the other jet chased her, Sailor Mars used Akuryo Taisan on Jadeite, which caused the two planes to chase him instead.

Just as Sailor Moon tries to finish Jadeite off with her tiara, he dodges it and appears to teleport back to Queen Beryl before either jet could flatten him. He tried to tell her that he had found out the true identities of the Sailor Senshi; however, she tolerated no excuses and sentenced him into “Eternal Sleep”, encased in a crystal. Queen Beryl then assigns the next Shitennou, Nephrite, as his successor. Tuxedo Mask was also revealed to have survived Jadeite's attack.

In episode 19, Queen Beryl mentions Jadeite's death, threatening to send Nephrite to Eternal Sleep like Jadeite should he fail.

Video Games[]

In the video game Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon: Another Story, Rei was given Jadeite's Yin (陰; Negative) Stone and went to Tibet in search of his Yang (陽; Positive) Stone. There, she fell in love with a man who closely resembled Jadeite, and was later revealed to be a creation of the people's prayers, based on Jadeite's image. Whether or not this meant she was attracted to Jadeite was not clarified, but it could have been meant to imply a relationship between the two.

Powers[]

Jadeite is shown to have telekinetic powers in episodes 3 and 13. He can use it to stop Sailor Moon's Moon Tiara Action midair, create barriers to protect himself, or move airplanes around to crush the Sailor Guardians.

Jadeite can perform illusions, such as in episode thirteen when he made Tokyo look like it was set on fire or projecting what looked like a giant version of himself over Tokyo.

Jadeite uses disguises often. In many of his schemes, Jadeite takes on the appearance of a human during his plans.

He also displays powers all of the Shittenou possess, such as the ability to teleport or harvest energy.

Trivia[]

  • Jadeite used the most number of aliases among his colleagues. Nephrite used a single alias, and Zoisite (although he did crossdress as Sailor Moon once) and Kunzite didn't use aliases.
  • During the in-universe live-action show in episode 59 of the anime, Jadeite can be seen briefly on stage along with Sailor Moon, Tuxedo Mask and her first Youma, Morga.
  • First confronting Sailor Moon in episode 3, he holds some distinctions: he is the first enemy to directly battle Sailor Moon in the entire series, the first enemy immune to Moon Tiara Action in the series, as well as the first non monster-of-the-day Sailor Moon fights.
  • Ironically, Jadeite's only successful attempt at gathering energy was the one episode he did not use a Youma; Nephrite is the second case of this, as well as the last case of the Dark Kingdom in which this occurs.
