Princess Serenity was the Princess of the Silver Millennium. Eventually, after the unfortunate and sudden destruction of the Moon, she was reincarnated as a 14-year-old girl named Usagi Tsukino.

Etymology[]

Princess Serenity's name comes from "Selene", who in Greek mythology was the goddess of the moon who fell in love with a shepherd from Earth named Endymion. It could also come from Mare Serenitatis, or the Sea of Serenity, which is a lunar mare on the Moon.

Appearance[]

Princess Serenity shares the same appearance with her reincarnation, Usagi Tsukino; she has blue eyes, long blonde hair styled in two buns with flowing pigtails, and a golden crescent moon on her forehead to mark her status as a member of the royal family of the Silver Millennium.

Serenity wore a white flowing gown with white shoulder pieces disconnected from her dress, an intricately decorated bodice with gold hoops, with the bust defined by a row of golden beads. Trailing at the back, was a white gauzy bow with long fluttery ribbons. She also wore golden spiral earrings and a golden beaded bracelet on her right wrist.

At climactic moments in the series, when Usagi becomes Serenity, she sometimes gains a pair of functioning angelic wings. She does this during the final battle of Sailor Moon SuperS, to save Sailor Chibi Moon when the two of them encounter Pegasus and also in the fifth and last season, during the fight with the fully-possessed Galaxia (now Chaos Galaxia) when she grabs the Sword of Sealing. It is unclear if this ability came from her past life, is Usagi's power, or came from Eternal Sailor Chibi Chibi or Sailor Cosmos herself and the Sword of Sealing.

Background[]

Princess Serenity was the Princess of the Moon and would often sneak down to Earth where she had met and fallen madly in love with Prince Endymion. When the war escalated between the two kingdoms, Endymion swore to aid Queen Serenity to defend her kingdom and people from the evil invasion from Queen Beryl, who was working with the evil universal force, Queen Metalia. Sadly, Serenity was murdered along with Endymion.

After Queen Serenity utilized the full strength of the Silver Crystal to seal way Queen Metalia, she also had Serenity, the Sailor Senshi, and her lover reincarnated on Earth to live happy lives.

Information[]

Sailor Moon[]

From the beginning to the middle of the series, Luna's task, along with awakening the Sailor Senshi, is searching for the Moon Princess. Mamoru also has constant dreams about a girl asking him to find the Silver Crystal. It is revealed in episode 34 that Princess Serenity's present incarnation is Usagi Tsukino.

Flashbacks in episodes 35 and 44 show that Serenity fell in love with Endymion, the Prince of Earth. But Queen Metalia kills both Endymion and Serenity during the invasion of the Moon Kingdom. Serenity's mother, the Queen, was able to seal away the evil which had inspired the attack, but everyone involved was killed. The Queen then used the Silver Crystal to give her daughter, her lover, and the Sailor Senshi another life, hoping in particular that, this time, her daughter and the prince would finally find happiness.

In the final battle against the Dark Kingdom, Usagi takes on Serenity's appearance and using the Silver Crystal and the combined powers of her friends, she can defeat Super Beryl. But as a consequence of using the crystal, she dies but is eventually resurrected, though without the memories of being a Sailor Senshi.

Sailor Moon R[]

While Princess Serenity does not make any direct appearances, Mamoru constantly has visions and nightmares about Usagi/Serenity dying, although these turn out to be false and they were only sent by King Endymion from the future. The second season also reveals that Serenity/Sailor Moon will ascend to the throne as Queen of Crystal Tokyo and the Earth under the name Neo-Queen Serenity. She also makes an appearance during the climax of the Sailor Moon R movie, where Usagi transforms into Serenity to use the power of the Silver Crystal to stop the meteor from hitting the Earth.

Sailor Moon S[]

Princess Serenity made a brief appearance in episode 91 along with Prince Endymion when the Spiral Heart Moon Rod was born from their love.

Sailor Moon SuperS[]

At the end of Sailor Moon SuperS, in episode 166, Sailor Moon transformed into Princess Serenity when she dove to save Sailor Chibi Moon. As they were falling, she was given powers from Pegasus, granting her functioning wings for her and Chibiusa.

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars[]

Princess Serenity makes her only and final appearance in the anime during episode 200 during her final battle with Chaos Galaxia.
