“Usagi vs. Rei: Nightmare in Dream Land” is the 11th episode of the 1st season of the Sailor Moon anime and the 11th episode overall. It aired in Japan on May 23, 1992. The DiC English dub title for this episode is "Nightmare in Dreamland" and it aired in North America on September 20, 1995.
Summary[]
The Sailor Guardians go to the Dream Land amusement park, where visitors have reportedly gone missing. The team splits into two groups: Usagi and Rei and Ami and Luna. But, much to Rei's frustration, Usagi is more focused on playing than finding the missing people.
Plot[]
Luna, Usagi, Ami and Rei are all called for a meeting at Hikawa Shrine, where Luna announces she is happy to now have three Sailor Guardians fighting for good. Usagi and Rei begin fighting over a manga, as Luna screams at them to knock it off. Luna then informs them the next step is finding the Princess, though she has no idea where she could be.
Ami presents a newspaper to them, mentioning she read about strange happenings at Dream Land, such as 50 people disappearing out of nowhere.
Sure enough, Jadeite is the one behind it, setting up a trap for the Sailor Guardians to react to. Queen Beryl is angry there are now three Sailor Guardians, and threatens to punish Jadeite if he fails with this plan. She also tells him that if destroying the Sailor Guardians is too much, she can give his job to someone else. Jadeite goes disguised as a worker at Dream Land, reporters press for information on the disappearances, only to be escorted out by Jadeite.
As the three Guardians and Luna investigate the park, they realise Usagi has parted from the group and is riding a carousel. Luna scolds Usagi, and Rei pushes her off the bench demanding she get her act together. As she picks herself up, she comes face to face with an animatronic lion controlled by the Dream Princess. Usagi is ecstatic to meet her, as the Princess makes all the animatronics in the park come to her as entertainment. Rei feels an evil aura emanating from them, and pulls Usagi off the back of a bear, immediately telling her about her feelings.
The Princess hears this, and announces that there will be a show happening at the House Of Sweets across the park. Luna decides to split up to gather more information, taking Ami as a partner, and Usagi and Rei are stuck with each other. Once left alone, they get into even more arguments. Rei tells Usagi about her senses, when she sees a little boy get on the back of a bear. The two begin fighting over whether the boy should ride it, nearly tearing him to pieces in the process until his mother interferes.
While riding on a train for small children, Usagi falls forward, head butting the back of Mamoru. He calls her "Bunhead" again after the encounter, and Rei agrees it’s the perfect name, using this to humiliate her. Usagi then asks him why he’s riding the train, and if he’s attempting to make friends with a child which embarrasses him.
Luna waits outside the House Of Sweets, when Usagi and Rei catch up to her. They ask where Ami went, only for Luna to point out she went inside. Inside, the Dream Princess uses her breath to put everyone to sleep, and drains their energy through an apple. Rei has another sense that something just happened, trying to get the locked door open. Luna tells them to transform into Sailor Moon and Sailor Mars, as Fire Soul is used to break through the door. They confront the Dream Princess, when she transports them to a dream world, where an illusion causes Sailor Mars to be bit by a snake. She starts to turn to stone, but by using Akuryo Taisan, she is able to stop the attack.
The Dream Princess transforms into a youma named Murido, who has the appearance of a doll. She puts them in another dream where they are on a romantic carousel with Tuxedo Mask and plans to drain their energy. The real Tuxedo Mask appears and knocks the apple out of her hand, returning them to the real world. Ami wakes up and transforms into Sailor Mercury, using Bubble Spray to confuse Murido. Sailor Mars places a scroll on her face, and Sailor Moon and Sailor Mars combine their Moon Tiara Action and Fire Soul attacks to turn her to ash. Jadeite is not pleased with this as now he has to report the destruction of the Princess to Queen Beryl.
Though they are now able to enjoy Dream Land, Usagi accuses Rei of having a bigger ice cream cone than hers and fights with her, eventually dropping hers.
