"Scent of a Monster: Chanela Will Steal Your Love" is the 5th episode of the 1st season of Sailor Moon anime and the 5th episode overall. It aired in Japan on April 11, 1992. This episode was not dubbed during DiC's license of the season; Viz Media has made a dub, which was first broadcasted online on September 7, 2014.
Summary[]
Usagi asks her family if they can officially keep Luna as a pet, but her little brother Shingo strongly objects due to his fear of cats. Instead, he brings home a pet Chanela, a creature that smells like perfume. Shingo becomes so absorbed in his new pet, that he behaves differently, which worries Usagi.
Plot[]
Usagi is awakened from her dreams by Shingo, who has discovered Luna sleeping on his bed. Shingo has a fear of cats and demands that Luna gets thrown out. During breakfast, Usagi asks her parents if they can keep Luna as a pet and they respond by saying that Usagi and Shingo should work it out between themselves.
Walking to school, Usagi asks Luna to do her best to get along with Shingo before parting ways. Luna goes to the pet store for reference on how to act around humans. In the Dark Kingdom, Jadeite informs Queen Beryl of a plan to gather energy by harnessing and enhancing human desires.
Luna meets Shingo outside of school, rubbing on his legs affectionately. This fails as he screams, confessing his fear of cats to his friend Mika, who shows him a new kind of pet called a Chanela. Chanela's are fluffy rabbit creatures that emit a powerful scent and are only sold at Pet Shop Perfume. They go there to look around, when the Chanela use a hypnosis over the two, causing them to purchase one each. Once with their pets, they lose interest in everything else.
That night Luna tries again to get Shingo's attention, but he kicks her away into the air. Usagi's parents share the news that they decided to keep both Luna and the Chanela, but Shingo is still not satisfied.
The next day Shingo closes himself in his bedroom with the Chanela, refusing to come out for even for school. Many of Usagi's classmates have also bought Chanela’s, and hide them when Ms. Haruna comes into the classroom. The owners fall into a trance, and can't resist trying to look at them. When Haruna sees this, she tries to confiscate them, though the students turn and leave the class in protest before she can. Usagi and Naru are suspicious of the Chanela‘s and Usagi decides to investigate the pet shop.
She enters Pet Shop Perfume and meets Luna, who‘s also investigating. Failing to heed Luna's warnings, she falls under the spell of a Chanela. Seeing the effect it has on Usagi, Luna takes the animal away in her jaws and Usagi returns to normal.
Realising it's the work of the Dark Kingdom, they immediately try to take Shingo's Chanela. He makes a run for it, and Usagi transforms into Sailor Moon, following him back to the pet shop. There, the Chanela owners come under the influence of Jadeite's Youma, Iguara, and prepare to distribute Chanela’s across town. Sailor Moon arrives to stop them, when she's chased by the customers around the store. Luna shouts to use Moon Tiara Action on everyone, but Usagi doesn't want to hurt Shingo. Luna tells her to use Moon Tiara Stardust instead which snaps everyone out of their trance. The Youma chases Sailor Moon outside the shop and grabs her, but Sailor Moon is able to finish Iguara with Moon Tiara Action while being held.
After the battle, Shingo follows her, believing that she is Sailor V. Hiding from her brother, Sailor Moon introduces herself and tells Shingo to be nice to a cat he knows called Luna. Shingo complies and completely spoils Luna from that moment on.

- The Moon Princess was first mentioned in this episode. While she was mentioned in the first episode, it was not specified that was from the Moon.
- Although Iguara never made an appearance in the DiC English dub, she briefly appeared in an early promotional video for the English dub of Sailor Moon that was made by DiC.
