Punishment Awaits: The House of Fortune is the Monster Mansion is the 2nd episode of the 1st season of Sailor Moon anime and the 2nd episode overall. It aired in Japan on March 14, 1992. This episode was never dubbed by DiC (see trivia for more), but Viz Media did dub the episode.

Summary[]

A new house of fortune opens up in the Juban District and quickly gains popularity for its accurate predictions. But soon, the customers who had their fortunes read begin to act violently including Gurio Umino, a boy who has a crush on Usagi. Suspecting that this is the work of a monster, Usagi and Luna decide to investigate the situation.

Plot[]

As everyone lines up to see a fortune teller, Jadeite gets a new idea on how he’s going to collect human energy. Queen Beryl calls Jadeite to the Dark Kingdom, telling him that she needs human energy as a substitute until the Silver Crystal is found.

Usagi sleeps in, her alarm clock goes off only to be ignored. Luna leaps on her bed to wake her up, she realises how late she is and gets ready for school. She opens the door to the classroom and attempts to crawl to her desk unnoticed, when Umino calls out to her. This earns her time out in the hall.

Umino has a crush on Usagi and decides to tell Naru about his feelings. She suggests going to a fortune teller to find out how she feels about him too. After school on her way to the Games Center, Usagi walks by a good hearted fortune teller. She feels bad for the lack of customers he has, due to the new House Of Fortune across the road. Having her fortune read, she’s told that a boy she sees all the time has a crush on her.

At the same time, Umino goes to House Of Fortune to find out what he should do to win Usagi's heart. The new fortune teller is the Youma, Balm in disguise, who brainwashes him.

Usagi waits outside the Game Center for her crush Motoki, who shows her how to beat the new Sailor V Game. Luna shows up and causes a scene, reminding her she’s to be at home. She says goodbye, when Motoki tells her that seeing her makes his day better.

Usagi decides to see the fortune teller again about Motoki. Seeing the stall packed up, she contemplates going to House Of Fortune instead. She kicks her shoe off as a heads or tails decision, which accidentally hits Mamoru in the head. Mamoru scolds Usagi and tells her to act like a lady for once. Infuriated, she puts her shoe back on and walks off.

Umino has his fortune read by Balm, who hypnotises him and assigns him the Tarot card corresponding to Satan. Usagi’s dad sees her wandering the streets while running errands, and walks home with her.

The next day at school, Naru asks Usagi if Umino’s admitted his feelings for her yet, much to her surprise. Umino approaches them without his uniform, causing Naru to scold him. He tries to kiss Usagi and flips up Ms. Haruna's skirt, revealing her undergarments. She starts to cry as she would never live this down, later in class she’s made to fall on the floor and humiliated again by Umino and another student.

Naru and Usagi talk about Umino's behavior during lunch, and realise it started after he visited House Of Fortune. They turn their attention to Umino and several others smashing the windows to the office, running to the scene. He grabs Usagi and tries to kiss her again, causing her to cry.

After school, Luna tells Usagi she can sense evil around Umino and that he may be possessed, though she’s hesitant to have to fight another monster. Sailor Moon goes to House Of Fortune, confronting Balm and having a deck of cards thrown at her at a fast speed. Balm commands a group of fainted boys, towards Sailor Moon’s direction. Backed up against a wall, Tuxedo Mask throws a rose towards the mob. Sailor Moon now has time to use Moon Tiara Action, defeating Balm and turning her to dust.

The next day while walking to school, Naru tells Umino about what he did yesterday. He feels degraded and ashamed of himself, when Usagi walks up to him and reassures him they’re all good. He makes a comment about how he should learn to be as unbothered as she is whenever she gets a bad grade, causing her to chase after him.

This was the 1st episode of the series to be completely cut from the English line up until Viz Media dubbed the episode. It was also the first episode to be cut from the Korean dub.
DiC skipped this episode possibly due to a possessed Umino's trouble-causing: flipping Miss Haruna's skirt, vandalizing a teacher's window, and forcing Usagi to kiss him.
The scene when Umino flipped Haruna Sakurada's skirt was cut out in the French and the Hungarian dubs.

Trivia[]

This is the first filler episode, as none of the events in this episode occurred in the manga.
This was the first of 6 episodes that were completely cut from the DiC English dub but is included in the Viz Media English dub. This also means that Kenji (Usagi's father) had his first appearance cut. The same is true with Motoki.
The Tarot card Balm used to control Umino and her other victims were card XV, The Devil.
After Usagi gets her palm read, the fortuneteller disappears for the rest of the episode.
When Balm dies, a tarot card can be seen; this would make her the first monster associated with cards, which would later become a pattern with Cardians.
