Some of the names in the translations and dubs often have meanings/etymologies that match or are close to the meanings/etymologies of their original names. The names can also have meanings that match their powers.

"Serena" is most likely a play on the word Selene, which is the name of a moon goddess in Greek mythology who fell in love with a shepherd named Endymion. It also derives from the name of the series' moon princess, which is alternately either "Selenity" (from Selene) or "Serenity" (from the Sea of Serenity on the moon). Serena is also the feminine singular of the Latin word "Serēnus", which means "Serene".[1]
"Lita" could be a pun on the word "lightning", one of the elements that Sailor Jupiter is known to fight with.
Also, in Norwegian Nynorsk, "lita" can mean "rely on" or "trust".[2] Makoto's first name in Japanese is written in hiragana as "まこと", which can be read as "実", which can mean "trust" or "sincerity" in Japanese.[3][4]
Lita could also be a reference to "Leda", one of the Moon's of Jupiter. [5]

"Eugeal" is an alternate anglization of "Yujiaru" (ユージアル), Eudial's name in Japanese. The same goes for changing "VesVes" to "BesuBesu." Her Japanese name ベスベス is literally romanized as "Besubesu."
"Trista" means "sad" in Esperanto and Ido.[6] Similarly, "Setsuna" is written in hiragana as "せつな", which is similar to the hiragana for the word "setsunai", which is "せつない". The hiragana for "setsunai" can be read as "切ない", which can mean "painful" or "heartrending".[7]
